We support positive change in the lives of others and we try to make a difference. That's why a portion of our sales goes to Billy’s Bikes 4 Honduras, a Registered Non-Profit Society (in British Columbia) whose purpose is to send lightly-used bicycles to kids in Siguatepique, Honduras.
There are approximately 30,000 children in the surrounding area of Siguatepique township, and lots of dusty unpaved roads and very few buses. Getting to school is often problematic. We've been to the town many times. We have a bike warehouse there and volunteers that distribute our bikes. Its a good system.
Bikes mean freedom to the children of Siguatepique. Kids can get to school more easily with a bike which translates into longer classroom time, richer learning, including the subject of environmental sustainability, which is another important angle too.
Bikes also represent a healthy outdoor recreational activity, a real alternative to gangs or drugs; and bicycles empower children to make friends, learn new skills (such as bike repair, or road safety) and have fun whilst doing so.
Our long term goal is to hold workshops on bike repair, bike maintenance and safety, cycling etiquette, racing and business. Wouldn't it be awesome if we could get more bike businesses going in the town and thereby contribute to the local economy?
